The Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia is reported to install giant sun umbrellas to protect worshippers from the heat.
According to an Arab News report, the Grand Mosque will get more than 300 huge canopies to provide shade in its outdoor courtyards.

The scheme, according to Arab News, has been approved byKing Abdullah as the mosque is set to emulate The Prophet’s Mosque in Medina where similar umbrellas are already in operation.
Aside from keeping pilgrims cool in the heat, they're also designed to retain warmth like a roof on chilly winter nights.

The current structure covers an area of 356,800 square metres (88.2 acres) including the outdoor and indoor praying spaces and can accommodate up to two million worshipers during the Hajj period, one of the largest annual gatherings of people in the world. Unlike many other mosques which are segregated, men and women can worship at the Grand Mosque together.
